During the first semester, Pool club ran structured training sessions every Thursday for two hours. These sessions formed the core activity of the society and provided members with a consistent opportunity to meet new people, play pool, and develop their skills in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Players of all experience levels were encouraged to take part, with more experienced members supporting newcomers by explaining the rules of the game, demonstrating correct techniques, and offering practical advice on shot selection and match strategy.
Alongside regular training, Pool club represented ATU in competitive matches against other colleges and universities. Members competed to the best of their ability, with many of these fixtures being closely contested. While results varied and wins were not always achieved, each match offered valuable experience and allowed members to apply the skills and knowledge developed during training in real competitive situations. These matches contributed to improved confidence, game awareness, and teamwork among those involved.
Training sessions also included internal matches between members, allowing players to practice competitive play in a relaxed setting. Individual practice was encouraged at times, with members focusing on improving accuracy, control, and consistency through repeated shot practice. Overall, the first semester was characterised by good attendance, steady improvement, and a shared commitment to learning, development, and enjoyment while representing ATU through Pool Society.
Looking ahead to the upcoming semester, Pool Society will be preparing for the major intervarsity pool competition taking place in Belfast. This event brings together universities from across Ireland, from MTU in Cork to Queen’s University Belfast, with teams competing at a single venue over one weekend to contest the overall title. Following last year’s success, where the ATU A team brought home the Shield, the society hopes to retain the Shield or compete for the Cup this year.
The competition, which takes place over a weekend in February, represents a key focus for the society in the coming semester. In addition to the competitive element, it offers a valuable social experience, allowing members to meet players from universities across the country and engage with the wider intervarsity pool community. For those attending, it is considered a highlight of the year and an important opportunity to represent ATU at a national level.

The Lads played very very well and really enjoyed their weekend at the intervarsitys with all 1st team members walking away with Gold Medals for the second year in a row.
The 2nds were not so fortunate but gave it their all in all of their matches showing spirit and determination for improvement to come back like a storm for next year.
2 of our 1sts Oisin O’Conner and Christian Holmes faced each other in the Top 8 of the Championship individuals with Christian Beating Oisin 4-2 putting him into the Semifinals of the Championship Singles tournament where he was knocked out by Ireland player Adam Hanlen captain of Maynooth 1st.
In the Trophy individuals 2nd team player Kyran Hamman got as far as the Quarter finals before being knocked out.
Sean McCarthy had to return home on the 2nd day allowing newcomer Ben Mayock to step in and fill his shoes on the third day in the trophy finals against Belfast Queens 1st and Maynooth 1st all the lads played an absolute blinder pulling out a win from a draw against Queens in the Semis with the winning frames coming from Christian Holmes and Oisin O’Conner who had a breaking Dish (finishing a frame from the break not missing a single ball) and absolutely steamrolling Maynooth in the final where the only 2 frames taken against ATU was by Ireland player Adam Hanlen.
Overall the weekend was an absolutely brilliant performance from the 2 teams who went and also a fantastic team building exercise for the lads from finding many many places to play pool together around Belfast City away from the competition and share a couple of meals as a team.
