Olympic Weightlifting FAQs
Are there competitions?
Yes there are. Competitions are organised by Weightlifting Ireland and take place throughout the year all over the country. Additionally there are age specific competitions for younger members and university specific competitions (great for your first experience). Many Irish athletes also compete in the UK and Europe at regional and national levels.
I love going to the gym/I'm a powerlifter, can I train with you?
Everyone is welcome to train with us but you should know that we train the sport of Weightlifting and that is what's expected during training sessions. So if you'd like to try our sport then you should join us.
Is the club open to beginners?
Yes of course! There is no expectation that you already know how to snatch and clean & jerk. We will teach from the ground up.
About Olympic Weightlifting Club

Weightlifting (often known as Olympic weightlifting) is a competitive strength sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with the aim of successfully lifting the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead. The snatch is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The clean and jerk is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders (the clean), and then from the shoulders to over the head (the jerk).

Check out this video that shows off some of the best lifts in Olympic history.
