Great year Junior Hurlers

ATUG 3.15

MTUC 2.27

A loss unfortunately on the road in Cork but this Junior hurling team did excite since last September reaching the League final in November and a championship win opener against UG with a narrow loss to UL and last nights loss to MTUC means non progression in the Cup competition. A resurrection of a second team in adult hurling in the college was the focus this year and achieved by this group of talented hurlers who some will now go on to play in the Fitzgibbon 1 competition next year as they on evidence are plenty good enough.

Lead by the Clare man Alex Kelly and our Donegal man at 6 Donal Farrelly we have established a base to ignite from . A committed bunch who love their hurling and we now in ATUSport have a platform for these lads to play optimize their full potential in games opportunities at this very high standard Nationally . Tom Nolan another fantastic stick man as is Shane Kelly, and the JK Brackens man Jamie Bergin would'nt be out of place in any company . Goalies Cathal Corless Kinvarra, Padraig Mitchel Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry are two very accomplished keepers. Cian Brennan Ardrahan excelled at 3 as did Christopher Byrnes Sarsfields at 2/7 . Finn Byrne Loughrea is a fine athlete also with potential to play on the bigger stage as is Aaron McDonagh the Killimordaly man.

Junior Hurling Championship – Round 3

ATU Galway vs MTU Cork

ATU Galway’s junior hurlers brought their Higher Education GAA Championship campaign to a close on Monday evening following a hard-fought encounter against a sharp and clinical MTU Cork side in Round 3.
From the throw-in, MTU Cork settled quickly and imposed themselves on the game with accurate shooting and strong movement up front. ATU Galway worked tirelessly to match their intensity, battling hard around the middle third and showing real determination in defence. Despite their efforts, Cork’s efficiency in front of goal proved decisive in the opening half as they converted key chances and built a significant lead by the interval.
ATU Galway kept plugging away, registering some well-taken points, but found themselves with a mountain to climb at the break.

Half Time
ATU Galway – 0-06
MTU Cork – 2-14

To their great credit, the Galway men emerged for the second half with renewed energy, belief, and attacking intent. They began to gain more possession and drive at the Cork defence with purpose. Their persistence was rewarded with three excellent goals, each the result of sharp movement and determined play, which brought renewed life to the contest and showcased the quality within the squad.
The work rate across the field was immense, with players putting their bodies on the line and fighting for every ball. While MTU Cork continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over and managed the closing stages effectively, ATU Galway never dropped their heads and continued to push right to the final whistle.

Full Time
ATU Galway – 3-15
MTU Cork – 2-27

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for our lads on this occasion. While the result didn’t go our way, the performance—particularly in the second half—highlighted the character, resilience, and pride within the group.
This marks the end of the journey for our junior hurlers this season, but there is immense appreciation for every single player who committed their time, effort, and energy throughout the campaign. Representing the college in the Higher Education GAA Junior Hurling Championship is a privilege, and this group did so with honesty and determination.
A sincere word of thanks must also go to the management team for their dedication, preparation, and constant support. Their work behind the scenes ensured the team was always ready to compete.
Though the championship run has come to an end, the experience gained and the bonds formed will stand to this group moving forward. There is plenty to be proud of, and the future remains bright.

The ATU Junior Hurlers put in a strong team performance this evening against UL, working hard and showing great determination throughout. They scored three excellent goals — two from Tom Nolan and one from Aaron McDonagh. Although they lost by just one points, the team showed real ambition and resilience. Focus now shifts to RD3 Feb 16th in MTU Cork to qualify .

Looking forward to seeing how this group fair out as they have real potential and it would be a shame not to max out Lads .

ATUG 0.08 UG 0.09
A tough afternoon at Liam Mellows for our ATU Junior Footballers as their Cup RD1 journey came to an end against the University of Galway. ATUd brightly and held a narrow advantage at the break, leading 0-7 to 0-0-5 after a competitive first half. The second half was a real battle, with both sides trading scores in a tight, physical contest. Unfortunately, it was University of Galway who edged it late on, outscoring ATU by 1 point (0-9) in the second period to turn the game their way. Despite the result, the effort, fight, and commitment shown by ATUG, never dropped. Plenty of positives to take, strong character on display, and this team will take lessons from this day and come back stronger.

Marino 2.09

VICTORY ATU Claim All-Ireland Champions Glory With Dominant Victory Over Marino

ATU camogie were crowned All-Ireland champions after producing a powerful and composed performance to overcome Marino in an entertaining and high-intensity final. From the opening whistle to the final moments, ATU demonstrated why they have been one of the standout teams in the competition this season, combining skill, work-rate and unity to secure a deserved national title.

Led superbly by joint captains Sarah Coleman and Ava Lynskey, ATU settled quickly into the contest, setting down an early marker with strong tackling and sharp movement through the lines. Both captains were central to ATU’s display, leading by example with their work ethic and communication, and ensuring the team maintained focus during key phases of the game.

ATU’s defence laid the platform for victory, showing excellent organisation and discipline as they absorbed Marino pressure and limited clear scoring chances. Timely interceptions, committed blocking and intelligent use of possession allowed ATU to transition effectively from defence into attack. The midfield unit worked tirelessly throughout, contesting every ball and ensuring ATU remained on the front foot.

Going forward, ATU were patient and clinical. The forward line moved the ball with confidence, creating space and converting chances when they arose. As the game progressed, ATU began to assert greater control, gradually pulling away as their fitness and cohesion came to the fore. Even when Marino threatened to mount a response, ATU responded with composure and determination, refusing to relinquish their grip on the contest.

The closing stages saw ATU manage the game expertly, maintaining possession and continuing to apply pressure until the final whistle confirmed their status as All-Ireland champions. Scenes of celebration followed as players, mentors and supporters marked a memorable achievement for the programme.

This success is a reflection not only of the players’ dedication and talent, but also of the immense work carried out by the management team throughout the campaign. Their preparation, tactical insight and commitment to player development were evident on the day, with ATU executing their game plan with clarity and confidence. The trust between players and management has been a defining feature of this team’s journey, culminating in a richly deserved national title.

For captains Sarah Coleman and Ava Lynskey, lifting the All-Ireland Ui Mhaolagain trophy was a fitting reward for their leadership and consistency across the season. For the squad as a whole, this victory represents a significant milestone and a moment that will be remembered with pride.

ATU camogie can now look back on an outstanding championship campaign, crowned by an All-Ireland title earned through teamwork, resilience and belief.

ATU Galway freshers football  played DCU Thursday evening in their semi final game

The  match defined by high intensity and fluctuating momentum,  fell just short in a hard-fought encounter against DCU on . Despite the  moments of individual brilliance, a clinical opening period from the opposition proved to be the difference. ATU  0 -11 to DCU 1 -12 .

Well done and great effort put in by all players and Managerment.

REPORT CREDITED : Donna McRoary (ATUG PR TEAM).

Discussion:

An early mis kick that didn't carry wide nor over the crossbar cost us dearly in Fresher Football semi final. The mis shot fell short and wasn't dealt with and ended up in our net . Lack of tracking runs and hunger for the ball in the middle third was also a factor. We had chances up front but didn't convert which was such a pity.

Micky Mulryan our Caltra man was excellent, as was Ciaran Mulhern first half. Cian Raftery was great with his surging runs but the outcome needed to be better at this level in support of the runner. Billy Ruane was a tower of strength in defense and Sean Gilmartin in goals handled and distributed massively all night. Olan Kelly has a big future as a traditional full back enforcer but we did mis Eoin Newell (Injured) in the middle third as an attacking option. Jake Maher the Offaly man always excels . We are dissappointed this morning as a great opportunity was missed but we are also so proud of this team who promised so much and delivered in spades with a league final appearance and a last four appearance in th CUP.

Grateful Lads Be proud

Onwards and Upwards for Sigerson next year .

ATU 3.16.  SETU WATERFORD 1.5

A real battle hardened performance by the ATU ladies football team tonight,  played in windy and cold Liam Mellows.
It was the visitors who got to grips with the conditions quickly and took the game to ATU immediately, going 0.3 after 7 minutes.   The ATU girls were finding it hard to adjust to playing with the wind in the first half ,  however once Alannah Deveraux registered the first score for ATU after 10 mins,  this seemed to settle the ladies from the west.  Unfortunately Alannah had to leave play on 14 mins with injury concerns.   The 1st half was evenly matched,  with the teams level no fewer on 3 occasions. With 5 minutes of the 1st half remaining, ATU playersd to click and some real good passages of play were stitched together which resulted in some fine scores.
ATU went in 1.8 to 1.4 ahead.   After some positive words of encouragement at half time, it was ATU who'd the second half the brighter,  while defending a breeze.  Sive Byrne won the throw in,  having stared for ATU camogie 24 hrs previous.  The second half belonged to ATU and they really dug deep for one another, and this showed in the quality of scoring and spread of scorers.  ATU finished commanding winners on a score line of 3.16 to 1.5.  They now play Trinity Tues week, with lots to work in the next week in training.
Panel...Aoife Cooney, Keeva Mcdonnell (capt), Kellie McGrath, Aliyah Clohessy,  Neasa Daly , Ciara Nyland, Kamile Butvilate, Aisling Costello (0.2), Sive Byrne, Alannah Deveraux (0.1), Blaithin Lavin (0.3), Saoirse Delaney,  Fiona Feeney(0.2), Millie Sheridan (2.3), Maedhbh ni Dhirean (1.4).
Subs used- Niamh Nestor (0.1) for Alannah Deveraux,  Shauna Donoghue for Sive Byrne, Karla Gavaghan for Neasa Daly, Karen O 'Boyle for Saoirse Delaney,  Ayla Whelan for Aliyah Clohessy,  Maeve Mcweeney,  Kateria Gilna, Laoise Concannon, Emer McMahon.

ATU Galway ladies football produced a strong second-half performance to defeat SETU Waterford despite bitterly cold and blustery conditions. Both teams battled the elements in an entertaining opening half, with ATU Galway taking a 1-8 to 1-4 lead into the break. Galway maintained their dominance after half-time, kicking on with greater control and accuracy in front of goal. Two second-half goals helped stretch the margin as SETU Waterford found scores hard to come by as the evening went on. At the final whistle our ATU ladies emerged comfortable winners on a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-5, booking their place in the next round. Strong performances across the field with special mention to Milly Sheridan and Maedhbh Ni Dhireain, which ensured Galway made full use of home advantage on a testing day for football.

Our Fresher football team played their quarter final match on Thursday against Ulster University who beat them in the league final pre Christmas by a single point .

In the mist of storm chandra  a replay of the all Ireland league final that was played in early December occurred.  The two teams unwilling to give an inch  to each other went in  level at half time
1 - 04 a piece.  ATU waisted no time in taking command with  a 2 point lead in the first 6 minutes and not  relinquishing that lead till the finish ending with 2 -08 ATU to 2 -06 UU . UU couldn't break through ATUG solid defense. While ATUG caught UU on the counter a few times. UU couldn't break down ATUG speed and precision on the counter attack,.

ATUG now look forward to and will prepare for an all Ireland semi final next week.

Congratulations to all the players and managerment involved, and a big thank you to Keith Murphy manager, coaches Conor O Brien and Martin Reddington.

Some magnificent performances throughout, with Galway Star Ciaran Mulhern having to withdraw at half time which shows the quality of the panel and mental toughness to erk out VICTORY regardless who plays or goes. Mikey Mulryan again was famous a class goal in the first half setting up the ambush on UU and Ciaran O Donnell' workrate stiffled no less a player than Donegal's young footballer of the year Finbar Roarty . Jake Maher was excellent in the corner there to do a job and the Offaly u20 player responded brilliantly . Cian Raftery at 6 always plays with heart on sleeve and again tonight was outstanding.  Conor Walsh our Sligo county man covered the pitch selflessly for the team and was a credit .Fitzmaurice ever dependable in goals with lazer kick outs always builds team confidence.  Newell in midfield is another outstanding prospect and one hopes his ankle recovers in time for next week .

Fresher Football Championship – Round 3

ATU vs TUS Midlands (TUSML)
ATU progressed to the quarter-finals of the Fresher Football Championship following an impressive and disciplined performance against TUSML in Round 3 of the competition. In a game played with high intensity and plenty at stake, the ATU lads showed great composure and character to come out on top and keep their championship campaign firmly on track.
From the opening minutes, the match was played at a lively pace, with both teams eager to assert themselves. TUSML looked to press high early on, attempting to disrupt ATU’s build-up play and force mistakes. However, ATU settled quickly, moving the ball confidently across the back line and into midfield, gradually gaining control and establishing their rhythm.
As the first half progressed, ATU began to grow in confidence and create meaningful opportunities. Their attacking movement caused consistent problems for the TUSML defence, with dangerous deliveries into the box and well-timed runs stretching the opposition. The breakthrough came after a sustained spell of pressure, with ATU capitalising on their dominance through a well-worked attacking move and a composed finish.
The remainder of the first half saw ATU continue to push forward, while TUSML looked to respond on the counterattack. ATU’s defensive unit remained well-organised, dealing calmly with any threat and ensuring they went into the break with a deserved advantage.
The second half saw TUSML come out with renewed determination, increasing the tempo and committing more bodies forward in search of a way back into the contest. ATU were forced to defend for periods, but showed maturity beyond their years, working tirelessly off the ball and maintaining their defensive shape.
ATU extended their advantage during the second half following another excellent passage of team play. Quick, intelligent passing opened up space, and the move was finished decisively, giving ATU greater control of the game and rewarding their persistence.
Despite the setback, TUSML continued to battle and put ATU under pressure late on. A tense closing spell required strong leadership and concentration from the ATU side, with crucial tackles, interceptions, and clearances ensuring their lead was protected until the final whistle.
When the referee brought the match to a close, ATU were worthy winners and rightly celebrated their progression into the quarter-finals of the Fresher Football Championship. The performance highlighted the squad’s teamwork, discipline, and commitment, with contributions across the pitch playing a key role in the victory.
This result represents a significant step forward for the ATU fresher squad and builds valuable momentum as they prepare for the quarter-final stage. With confidence growing and performances improving, the ATU lads will look ahead with belief, knowing they have earned their place among the final teams remaining in the competition.

Fitzgibbon Cup – Round 2 Match Report - Laoise O Shea (Head of PR).

Round 2 of the Fitzgibbon Cup saw ATU Galway take on MICL in a hard-fought and entertaining encounter. Unfortunately, it wasn’t our lads’ day, but despite the result there was no shortage of effort, commitment, or pride shown throughout the performance.
ATU Galway made an explosive start to the game and were ruthless in front of goal, building a sizeable advantage in the opening half. MICL battled well and worked some excellent scoring opportunities, registering a series of fine points to stay in touch. However, at the half-time whistle ATU Galway held the upper hand, leading 4-06 to 0-11.
MICL responded positively after the break, showing real resilience and character. The lads upped the tempo, fought hard for every possession, and applied consistent pressure across the field. This effort was rewarded with a well-taken goal and a strong return of points as MICL continued to push ATU Galway all the way to the final whistle. ATU Galway added further scores of their own in a competitive second half, and at full time the scoreline read ATU Galway 5-09 to MICL 1-24.
While the result means MICL progress and ATU Galway’s Fitzgibbon Cup campaign comes to an end, the performance and spirit shown by the lads throughout the competition deserves great credit. They left everything on the pitch and represented ATU Galway with pride. A sincere word of thanks goes to Brian Hanley and all his coaches and selectors for their dedication and commitment in guiding the team through the championship.

In an outstanding team performance aligned to team play and support play this display has to be recognised as to a man they emptied the tank and could be argued we deserved something from this workmanlike commitment to the game of hurling.

Next up a relegation game to maintain our Fitzgibbon Cup status .

A Proud honorable performance .

Sigerson Cup – Match Report

ATU Galway’s Sigerson Cup campaign came to an end following a narrow and hard-fought defeat to DCU in what was an intense, high-quality contest from start to finish. While the final score did not fall in our favour, the performance delivered by the lads was one full of courage, commitment, and togetherness, leaving everyone involved with plenty to be proud of.
From the opening whistle, both sides set a fierce pace, with ATU Galway showing great intent and confidence on the ball. The lads worked tirelessly through the lines, creating scoring chances and taking them well, while also matching DCU physically around the field. Defensively, ATU Galway stood firm under pressure, and at the other end of the pitch the forwards were sharp and composed in front of the posts. DCU responded with scores of their own, and after an entertaining and evenly balanced first half, the sides went in level at the break, 1-08 a piece, a fair reflection of the battle that had unfolded. The second half was equally competitive, with neither team able to pull away. ATU Galway continued to show great resilience and work rate, fighting for every possession and refusing to give DCU any easy chances. Scores were exchanged throughout the half, and the lads kept pushing right to the final whistle, showing real character and belief in their ability to turn the game in their favour. Despite their best efforts, DCU managed to edge ahead in the closing stages, and at full time the scoreboard read DCU 1-16 to ATU Galway 1-14.
While this result brings ATU Galway’s Sigerson Cup campaign to a close, it does little to reflect the dedication, effort, and pride shown by this group of players throughout the competition. The lads consistently represented their college with passion and determination, leaving everything on the pitch in every outing. The commitment shown both on and off the field has been a credit to everyone involved.
A sincere word of thanks must go to Jack Hynes and all his coaches and selectors for the tireless work, guidance, and support they provided to the panel throughout the campaign. Their dedication and belief in the group played a huge role in the performances produced. Although the Sigerson journey has come to an end, this team can hold their heads high, knowing they gave their all and represented ATU Galway with great pride.
"Our  lads are not just footballer's  but good lads they love playing and representing the college and they are gutted about tonight" stated JACK HYNES manager ..

Fresher Hurling Championship – Round 1
ATU Galway vs UCD

ATU Galway began their Fresher Hurling Championship campaign in dramatic fashion, producing a superb comeback performance to defeat UCD by two points in an entertaining and hard-fought Round 1 encounter.

The opening half belonged largely to UCD, who settled quickly and played with confidence in possession. Their sharp movement and clinical finishing caused problems for the ATU Galway defence, and two well-worked goals, combined with a series of accurate points, allowed them to open up a seven-point lead. ATU Galway battled throughout the half and showed flashes of quality, registering a goal and several important points, but they found themselves trailing at the break on a scoreline of ATU Galway 1-05, UCD 2-09.

Despite the deficit, there were encouraging signs for ATU Galway. Colm Burke led by example, working tirelessly around the field and providing a focal point in attack. Ben Porter remained composed under pressure and continued to threaten the UCD defence with intelligent movement and well-taken scores. Micheál Bolan was also highly impressive, showing great energy, skill, and determination, and his performance stood out as the game progressed.

The second half saw a complete transformation in the contest. ATU Galway emerged with far greater intensity and began to dominate the middle third, winning primary possession and moving the ball with pace and precision. As the pressure mounted, the scores began to flow, with ATU Galway steadily chipping away at the UCD lead. Burke’s leadership and drive were crucial during this period, Porter contributed vital points at key moments, and Bolan continued to excel with an outstanding all-round display.

ATU Galway’s relentless second-half effort ultimately proved decisive, as they overturned the seven-point deficit and edged ahead in the closing stages. When the final whistle sounded, it confirmed a memorable comeback victory, with ATU Galway finishing on 1-17 to UCD’s 2-12.

It was a hugely positive start to the championship for ATU Galway, with their resilience, teamwork, and second-half dominance laying down an early marker for the remainder of the competition.

Freshers Football Championship – Round 2
ATU Galway vs NUIG

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for ATU Galway in Round 2 of the Freshers Football Championship, as they suffered a narrow one-point defeat to NUIG in a highly competitive and entertaining contest.
The game began at a lively pace, with both sides eager to gain an early advantage. ATU Galway worked hard throughout the opening half but found scores difficult to come by, while NUIG were more efficient in front of goal. A NUIG goal during the first half proved crucial, and despite strong defensive work from ATU Galway, they trailed at the interval on a score line of 1-05 to 0-04.
ATU Galway responded impressively after the break, showing great intensity and determination. Their increased pressure paid off when they struck a vital goal, swinging momentum firmly in their favour. Backed up by a run of well-taken points, ATU Galway clawed their way back into contention and pushed NUIG to the limit.
As the match entered its closing stages, the intensity rose, with both teams trading scores in a tense and physical battle. ATU Galway pressed hard in search of a late score to turn the game around, but NUIG managed to edge ahead in the dying moments. The final whistle confirmed a heartbreaking finish, with NUIG claiming victory by the smallest of margins, 1-10 to 1-09.
While the result was disappointing, it was clear that ATU Galway left everything on the pitch. The lads played their best, showing heart, resilience, and strong teamwork throughout, and can take plenty of positives from the performance.
Attention now turns to their next challenge as ATU Galway travel to Athlone next week to face TUSML. With the level of performance shown in this match, the squad will be confident of bouncing back and putting in another strong display on the road.

A loss on the road in Waterford to a very well drilled SETUW squad . Injuries and un-availability of some squad members in the run in didn't enhance Brian Hanley charges prospects. A poor night for hurling with driving rain and wind our lads were a credit with effort and commitment throughout . Poor goals conceded plus two missed penalties was the story of the match. A Rory Burke goal gave us a lifeline but all too late as time ran out and scuppered an ATUG comeback which was looking likely.

Dylan Dunne and Robbie Meehan two great hurling students who commit weekly to sessions and show great leadership were selected as our captains for the year .

ATU Galway 1.20

St Mary's Belfast 0.12

A MAGICIAL performance from our Sigerson squad in Dublin last night securing RD2 VICTORY for the fist time in a decade . Controlled composed football, aligned to teamplay and scoring prowess was the story of the night . A very well drilled team led by Jack Hynes manager, Shannon McIlhenney, Martin Reddington with time well spent on the Bus journey up with coaches holding individual meetings with players to discuss tactics and player positional roles . The joy in everyone was evident at the final whistle, a relief that we performed to our max and won the day breaking a run of defeats that habituely stacked up over the years .

Conor Reid was emmence at mid field kicking three two pointers and a one pointer whilst also available in defense, as was Paul Kelly a real leader linking play and contributing to attack with a two pointer to boast. David Prendergast an amazing attack minded player scored the goal to lift the gloom and build confidence as well as contributing points from his trusty left/right pegs.  Darragh Hegarty at 6 is a tower consistantly agressive in the tackle supported by Niall Prenderville at 3 the Donegal senior never fails to turn up. Vinny Gill again to the fore with his attacking minded surges from defense is a real treat to watch. Our kick outs from Eamon McGrath were a sight, how he effortlessly brushes through the football with his right peg so accurately across many distances and angles and was also so safe under the high ball .

Daire O Callaghan, Fionn McDonnacha, James Lavelle, Darragh McCabe, all put the shoulder to the wheel in what can only be described as a breakthrough victory with current 4th years sampling a success in Sigerson for the first time ever on their academic journey .

A great night for the College

Fresher Football Championship – Round 1
ATU Sligo vs ATU Galway
Venue: Sligo

ATU Galway began their Fresher Football Championship campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding away victory over ATU Sligo in Round 1, producing a strong all-round performance in challenging away conditions in Sligo.
The match got off to a lively start, with both sides keen to set the tone early. ATU Sligo made good use of home advantage in the opening stages, applying pressure and matching Galway score for score. Galway, however, soon settled into the contest, with their half-forward line beginning to influence proceedings and drive the team forward.
A crucial Galway goal midway through the first half shifted the momentum in the visitors’ favour. Strong attacking play from Mikey Mulryan, and Eoin Newell caused consistent problems for the Sligo defence, while Ciaran O’Donnell played a key role in linking play and creating scoring opportunities. Galway continued to add points through patient build-up play and clinical finishing, while Sligo responded with a goal and several scores of their own to stay in touch.
Despite Sligo’s resistance, Galway’s sharpness in front of goal and solid defensive structure ensured they carried a four-point lead into the break.
Half-Time Score:
ATU Galway 1-10
ATU Sligo 1-06

Galway emerged with real intent in the second half, increasing the tempo and asserting greater control over possession. Their work rate around the middle of the field improved noticeably, allowing them to launch quick attacks and maintain sustained pressure. The Galway forwards continued to impress, with Mulryan and Newell stretching the Sligo defence and O’Donnell dictating play through the centre.
A steady stream of points, extended Galway’s advantage and began to tell on the scoreboard. Defensively, Galway were disciplined and organised, limiting Sligo’s chances and forcing them to work hard for every score. While ATU Sligo showed great determination and continued to battle throughout, Galway’s fitness and depth proved decisive as the game wore on.
Galway managed the closing stages professionally, keeping the scoreboard ticking over and seeing out the match with confidence to record a convincing opening-round win.
Full-Time Score:
ATU Galway 1-23
ATU Sligo 1-13

Overall, it was an excellent team performance from ATU Galway, highlighted by strong contributions across the field and standout displays from their half-forward line. Attention now turns to Round 2, where ATU Galway will face NUIG at home next Thursday, as they look to build on this positive start to the championship.

UCD 3 3.12

ATU Galway 0.10

A terrific performance full of heart guile and commitment from our lads last night on the road in UCD Belfield . The story of the game was two costly mistakes with UCD capitalised on to maximum effect one in either half. Our management team ran the line brilliantly hampered with a number of scholarship students un-available due to recent knocks picked up on the inter county circuit which left a total of six players not up for selection. We now move on to RD2 on Wednesday January 14th who we play St. Mary's Belfast at a neutral Dublin venue .. Vinny Gill at the back was excellent all night as was Ryan Roche in mid field with David Prendergast on fire from play scoring at will and proving a thorn in the UCD defense . Paul Kelly used the ball effectively as did Fionn McDonnacha but special mention on the night goes to Daire Callaghan and Padraig Goodwin who left exams in ATUG travelled up the road and committed to playing for the college, arriving on time for the warm up. Niall Prenderville the highly thought of Donegal man also proved to be a leader on the field and was ably assisted by Conor Reid of Mayo ..

Next up St. Marys Belfast in a RD2 knockout game .

Electric Ireland Championship Draws

Posted 3rd Dec 2025
Author Damien Coleman (Development Officer)

The draws for the 2026 Electric Ireland Higher Education GAA Championships took place in Croke Park today.

Reigning Sigerson Cup champions, DCU, have been given a tricky opener away to 2024 champions, Ulster University.

When the two teams met in this year’s semi-final the Dubliners prevailed narrowly after extra-time.

“That’s as tough as it gets,” said DCU and Dublin footballer, Greg McEnaney after the draw. “We were lucky enough last year in the semi-final to get away from them in extra-time. That’s definitely as tough as it gets, in Jordanstown as well."

Last year’s beaten finalists, UCD, will have a home tie against ATU Galway while recently crowned Electric Ireland Higher Education Division One League champions, UL, are away to MTU Cork.

Reigning Fitzgibbon Cup champions, University of Limerick, who are gunning for a fourth title in five years will get an early test of their mettle in the group phase.

They’re in Group A along with DCU who they beat in this year’s final, and Maynooth University.

“They’re two strong teams,” said UL’s Killian Doyle after the draw. “We had DCU in the final last year and they’re a very strong team. I think that’s away as well so going up to DCU will be a tough place to go.

“If you top the group you get a home quarter-final which is key, so hopefully we can top the group.”

Group B is made up of local rivals UCC and MTU Cork along with Garda College, University of Galway, UCD, and TUS Midwest are in Group C, and 2024 champions Mary Immaculate College, SETU Waterford, and ATU Galway are in Group D.

A Hearth breaking defeat by the bare minimum for our Ladies on the road in SETU Carlow in last nights league final.

Congrats to the winners SETU C on a score line of 3.07 to 2.09 . This team will bounce back I've no doubt as the talent in the ranks plus the hard working squad and management team will want to right this defeat and will be motivated to do so in the championship. Not a bad thing one might say in hindsight as this group all through last year and up until last night were un defeated and lessons can now be learnt and a reset and growth from this bump in the road. Teamplay and commradarie and a togetherness are now necessary and all will reflect and see if their individual contributions from Sept are of a total teamplay contribution .

A small set back Ladies which I've no doubt will be corrected for the championship .

ATUGALWAY 1.17 / University Limerick 1.14

A massive WIN for our Fresher Hurlers in the League on the road in UL last night lead by mid field general and captain Michael Burke from the Skehana-Mountbellew club in Galway. A tight game from the off with our lads slightly in front all night but pushed to the limit from the off . Teamplay was the order of the day with skilled link up hurling. Jonah Donnellan at 6 was central in this team play effort with the majority of players trying to do the right thing all through.  Michael Burke lead the defense and attacks as an essential link player supported by Joe Clancy the Tubber man who caused difficulty in the UL defense with his surging runs . Jake Keady at 11 picked off some nice early scores from loose play showing a class in his striking . The hard working Brian Horan was another thorn scoring points and substitute Darragh Flynn the Sligo man scored the vital goal to put distance between the sides. Colm Burke was industrious throughout and his free taking immaculate under pressure . Jack Murray excelled at corner back a position alien to him but a real tenacious player .Oscar O Gorman the Kilconieron man was at it from the off and never relented a fine game had from our no 7.

This squad now await championship fixtures and will step up to Fresher 1 from January .

Captain Fantastic Alex Kelly from Lisdoon in Clare was a real leader in defense coming out with ball after ball again supported by Donal Farrelly on this front . Aaron McDonagh a fine hurler at 8 scored vital points and landed a goal from mid field also and this man sure does empty the tank along side Pat Regan who works so hard also and this mid field partnership certainly looks formidable . ATU Freshers vs. Maynooth University – Semi-Final Match Report
Result (After Extra Time): ATU 1-12 | Maynooth 0-14

ATU Freshers booked their place in the final after an extraordinary extra-time battle with Maynooth University, edging a single-point victory in a pulsating quarter-final that showcased grit, resilience, and standout individual performances. The contest had everything—momentum swings, high-pressure scoring, last-ditch defending, and a dramatic finish worthy of knockout football.
From the first whistle, it was clear that both sides had come prepared for a physical, high-intensity encounter. Maynooth settled slightly quicker, clipping over early points and forcing ATU to dig deep defensively. But it was ATU’s organisation at the back, led superbly by Tadhg Murphy (No. 2), that prevented Maynooth from turning spells of possession into goals. Murphy’s composure on the ball, aggressive tackling, and ability to break up attacks kept ATU in the contest during a heavily pressurised first half.
In centre back, Cian Rafferty (No. 6) quickly emerged as the heartbeat of the team. His aerial presence, relentless work rate, and intelligent distribution helped ATU establish a foothold as the game progressed. Rafferty’s influence grew with every minute—winning turnovers, linking defence to attack, and driving the team forward in key moments. His leadership in the middle third was vital in settling ATU after Maynooth’s early pressure.
Despite strong phases of play from both sides, neither team could fully pull away. ATU relied heavily on their defensive structure and discipline, while Maynooth threatened constantly with sharp movement and accurate point-taking. The scoreboard remained finely balanced, and by the time the final whistle blew on normal time, the sides were inseparable, sending the match into a tense period of extra time.
Extra time brought out the very best in ATU. Their fitness, organisation, and mentality shone through when it mattered most. The pivotal moment arrived when ATU broke through for the only goal of the game—a decisive, brilliantly worked move that gave them the narrow edge they desperately needed. With both teams continuing to trade points, that goal ultimately separated the sides.
But the victory would not have been possible without the heroics of Sean Gilmartin, who delivered a goalkeeper’s performance of the highest quality. Throughout the match—and especially in extra time—Gilmartin produced crucial saves, commanded his square with confidence, and repeatedly relieved pressure with his accurate kick-outs. In the dying stages, when Maynooth surged forward in search of an equaliser, Gilmartin stood tall, making a superb late intervention that preserved ATU’s slender advantage. The final score—ATU 1-12, Maynooth 0-14—reflected the razor-thin margins in a thrilling contest. ATU’s ability to deliver under pressure, combined with standout displays from Rafferty, Murphy, and Gilmartin, proved the difference on a day when every possession, tackle, and score mattered.
As the final whistle echoed across the pitch, ATU’s players and supporters celebrated a hard-earned and deeply impressive Semi-final win. With momentum building and belief growing, the Freshers now march into the final full of confidence—and fully aware that performances like this can carry them even further.
A night of character. A night of courage. A night ATU won’t soon forget.

Our ladies footballers served up an entertaining clash against the University of Galway this evening in Liam Mellows, resulting in a well deserved victory.?Both sides traded points in a fast, open first half, however UG narrowly led at the interval, holding a 1-6 to 1-5 advantage at halftime.
?ATU emerged transformed for the second half, upping their pace and physicality.?A quickfire goal from ATU turned the momentum firmly in their favour.?UG defended bravely but struggled to break through ATU’s reorganised back line.?A third ATU goal effectively sealed the contest heading into the final minutes.?UG continued to battle, adding late points but unable to claw back the deficit.?ATU finished strong, taking a deserved 3-11 to 1-10 victory.

Report: Roisin Gerathy / Rosalind Smith (PR Team)..

We now look forward to a semi final clash next week against group runners up in the other section. To the fore last night was Ciara Niland improving and leading with every game, Keeva McDonnell and Kelli Mcgrath feriously competitive at the back ably assisted by Nessa Daly who just never compromises in a tackle and her link play at the back is vital always. Aoife Cooney in goals has excelled under this management team with her saving reliability and kick out distribution so valuable in the possession stakes with this team. Tara Doran and Sive Byrne the two Wicklow ladies are a gift to college GAA sport this year in ATU dual players who always show up and put in a hard shift. Up front we have many gems in Aishling Costello, Milly Sheridan, Fiona Feeney, Emer McDonnell, Saoirse Delaney, Allanah Devereux, Bláitin Lavin .. If the preparation continues on track and the players continue to buy into their outstanding management only good things lie in wait for this committed squad of ladies.

OUTSTANDING FRESHER PERFORMANCES in Quarter Final shootouts at home in MELLOWS ..

OUR FRESHER Footballers and HURLERS  qualify for semi finals of the Higher Education leagues with gutsy WINS in there respective games . The Footballers over came DKIT by the narrowest of margins 2.12 to 1.14 with a massive performance from Ciaran Mulkerrins from the Mountbellew-Moylough  club and Manager Keith Murphy coach Martin Reddington and student Conor O Brien were thrilled to have reached this milestone in A fresher football .

The HURLERS also drove on and now play at semi final stage awaiting a fixture WK Nov 17th . They fought so hard in horrible weather conditions and showed commitment  and resilience in not so pretty underfoot conditions . A Team to keep an eye on this season for sure led by Adrian Furey coached by Kevin Lally and selector Mikey Ryan .

Looking forward to both fixtures as they emerge at S/F stage in the Electric Ireland competitions .
