ATU Galway vs MTU Cork Fresher Hurling Semi Final
ATU Galway are through to the All-Ireland Fresher Hurling Final after a titanic semi-final battle with MTU Cork that had everything – goals, drama, extra-time tension and a nerve-shredding penalty shootout. From the throw-in, this contest lived up to its billing. MTU Cork edged the opening half, showing sharpness in attack and clinical finishing to lead at the break, 1-12 to 1-09. ATU’s first-half goal ensured they remained firmly in contention, but Cork’s accuracy from placed balls and open play kept them narrowly in front.
Second-Half Surge
ATU emerged for the second half with renewed intensity. Their direct running and sharper movement inside caused problems for the MTU defence, and two crucial green flags swung momentum their way. However, MTU refused to yield, matching scores and responding with goals of their own to force the game to extra-time. At the end of a breathless 60 minutes, the sides could not be separated:
ATU 3-19 – MTU 2-22.

Extra-Time Drama
Fatigue began to show in extra-time, but the quality never dipped. ATU struck early with two massive goals, surging ahead and leading at the interval of extra-time by 5-24 to 3-24. It looked as though the Galway side had finally broken their opponents’ resistance. MTU Cork mounted one final push. A late goal and a series of hard-earned points levelled matters yet again, with the scoreboard reading 5-25 to 4-28 at the final whistle after extra-time – deadlocked at 40 points apiece.

Penalty Shootout Nerve
With nothing separating the teams after over 80 minutes of hurling, penalties would decide it. In a tense shootout, ATU Galway held their nerve, converting four of their efforts. MTU Cork battled bravely but managed three successful strikes. When the decisive penalty rippled the net, the ATU bench erupted in celebration.
ATU Galway win 4-3 on penalties.

Marching On to the Final
It was a display of resilience, scoring power and mental strength from ATU Galway, who showed remarkable character to respond to every MTU challenge. Their reward is a place in the All-Ireland Fresher Final against
University of Limerick next week. After a semi-final for the ages, ATU will travel to the decider full of belief that they can finish the job and bring the title west. A classic. A battle. And now – an All-Ireland Final awaits.
