Freshers Football Championship – Round 2
ATU Galway vs NUIG

Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for ATU Galway in Round 2 of the Freshers Football Championship, as they suffered a narrow one-point defeat to NUIG in a highly competitive and entertaining contest.
The game began at a lively pace, with both sides eager to gain an early advantage. ATU Galway worked hard throughout the opening half but found scores difficult to come by, while NUIG were more efficient in front of goal. A NUIG goal during the first half proved crucial, and despite strong defensive work from ATU Galway, they trailed at the interval on a score line of 1-05 to 0-04.
ATU Galway responded impressively after the break, showing great intensity and determination. Their increased pressure paid off when they struck a vital goal, swinging momentum firmly in their favour. Backed up by a run of well-taken points, ATU Galway clawed their way back into contention and pushed NUIG to the limit.
As the match entered its closing stages, the intensity rose, with both teams trading scores in a tense and physical battle. ATU Galway pressed hard in search of a late score to turn the game around, but NUIG managed to edge ahead in the dying moments. The final whistle confirmed a heartbreaking finish, with NUIG claiming victory by the smallest of margins, 1-10 to 1-09.
While the result was disappointing, it was clear that ATU Galway left everything on the pitch. The lads played their best, showing heart, resilience, and strong teamwork throughout, and can take plenty of positives from the performance.
Attention now turns to their next challenge as ATU Galway travel to Athlone next week to face TUSML. With the level of performance shown in this match, the squad will be confident of bouncing back and putting in another strong display on the road.
