Fresher Football Championship – Round 1
ATU Sligo vs ATU Galway
Venue: Sligo

ATU Galway began their Fresher Football Championship campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding away victory over ATU Sligo in Round 1, producing a strong all-round performance in challenging away conditions in Sligo.
The match got off to a lively start, with both sides keen to set the tone early. ATU Sligo made good use of home advantage in the opening stages, applying pressure and matching Galway score for score. Galway, however, soon settled into the contest, with their half-forward line beginning to influence proceedings and drive the team forward.
A crucial Galway goal midway through the first half shifted the momentum in the visitors’ favour. Strong attacking play from Mikey Mulryan, and Eoin Newell caused consistent problems for the Sligo defence, while Ciaran O’Donnell played a key role in linking play and creating scoring opportunities. Galway continued to add points through patient build-up play and clinical finishing, while Sligo responded with a goal and several scores of their own to stay in touch.
Despite Sligo’s resistance, Galway’s sharpness in front of goal and solid defensive structure ensured they carried a four-point lead into the break.
Half-Time Score:
ATU Galway 1-10
ATU Sligo 1-06

Galway emerged with real intent in the second half, increasing the tempo and asserting greater control over possession. Their work rate around the middle of the field improved noticeably, allowing them to launch quick attacks and maintain sustained pressure. The Galway forwards continued to impress, with Mulryan and Newell stretching the Sligo defence and O’Donnell dictating play through the centre.
A steady stream of points, extended Galway’s advantage and began to tell on the scoreboard. Defensively, Galway were disciplined and organised, limiting Sligo’s chances and forcing them to work hard for every score. While ATU Sligo showed great determination and continued to battle throughout, Galway’s fitness and depth proved decisive as the game wore on.
Galway managed the closing stages professionally, keeping the scoreboard ticking over and seeing out the match with confidence to record a convincing opening-round win.
Full-Time Score:
ATU Galway 1-23
ATU Sligo 1-13

Overall, it was an excellent team performance from ATU Galway, highlighted by strong contributions across the field and standout displays from their half-forward line. Attention now turns to Round 2, where ATU Galway will face NUIG at home next Thursday, as they look to build on this positive start to the championship.
