Semester two

The club had a very busy period after the Christmas break and although our 1st team did not have any more competitive games after a poor 1st term, our 2nd team continued their massive

Improvement and were on a constant upward curve. Numbers at training were consistent from Jan – March with a mix of 1st and 2nd teamers as well as many recreational players turning out and getting involved.

Our 2nd team played their Eustace shield ¼ final away to Blanchardstown in Dublin and after a slow start, found themselves 0-2 down on 20 mins.

However, a terrific response resulted in goals from Walid Muhsin, José Poblaciones, Clinton Imade and Usama Israr x 2 giving us a massive 5-3 win on the day.

In the semi-final, we found ourselves once again away to Griffith college in Dublin, who had beaten us earlier in the season in a league game.

But on this occasion, our lads rose to the challenge and came away with a deserved 2-1 win, courtesy of goals from José Poblaciones and Clinton Imade.

The college cup finals were once again held at Athlone stadium at the end of February and we played Colaiste Ide in the final on Tues 28th.

In what was a very close affair that was 0-0 for over an hour, an unfortunate 2nd yellow card which resulted in a sending off, turned the game in Colaiste Ide’s favour which led to us losing out by 0-2.

A heroic campaign by all involved in this squad ended with a tinge of what might have been, but the lads can be very proud of the progress made and look forward to next season.

The semester so far

Our ATU Galway soccer club had a hectic 1st semester with both our squads playing a total of 11 games in an 8-week period from mid-October to late-November.

Our first team didn't have a good start to the year. The only highlight for them was the 2-2 draw in a 'Derby game' against rivals across the bright University of Galway. In this particular game, the team was ahead on two occasions, only to concede a very late equalizer goal in the 93rd minute of the game.

The second team also had a slow start to their campaign, in most games the lost by a goal here and there. They did however improve with each game, leaving them with a win in their last shield game before Christmas. This leaves the team in a lovely position. They now await a quarter final fixture in the new year, with hopes to progress further.

GMIT Soccer were back in action with trials and training sessions on Sept 29th. Since then, we have had over 80 players participating at different stages throughout the weeks and months. College competitions back on November 2nd and we have had a hectic schedule since.

Our 1st Team have played 3 games so far and are currently sitting on top of their group with just 1 game remaining. Any positive result at home against MUS – Limerick on November 30th will gain qualification to the knock-out phase. Wed with a 3-2 home win against MTU – Cork, with goals from Calum Browne x 2 and Evan Reape. Next up was a 2-1 away win against Carlow IT, with goals again from Calum and Evan. Just this week we played an entertaining 2-2 draw in the ‘Derby’ game against NUIG, with 2 crackers from Calum Browne and Ben Edeh.

Our 2nd Team are also unbeaten with 2 games played and are currently lying in 2nd place in the league. Only a victory over local rivals GTI in their remaining fixture on Nov 2nd will ensure qualification to the knock-out phase. Wed with an away draw to MUS – Limerick with goals from Aaron Kelly and Daniel Cafferky. Next up was an away trip to MUS – Athlone in which we won 6-0 with goals from Daniel Cafferky, Thomas Gillespie, Francesco Bonito and an Aaron Kelly hat-trick.

Training has continued over the last number of weeks for all players at all levels and new players are always welcome on the Wednesday evenings for assessments.
