ATU Seniors 7-3 College of FET
FULL-TIME

A brilliant comeback from the team as ATU Seniors came from behind to secure an emphatic 7-3 win over College of FET.

ATU got off to a poor start, conceding inside the first minute before College of FET doubled their lead on 25 minutes to leave the lads 2-0 down.

Gavin Smyth got ATU back into the game with a penalty on 40 minutes before Michael Moran levelled things up just before half-time to make it 2-2.

College of FET regained the lead five minutes into the second half, but the response was immediate as Tom Daly finished after great work from Ben Place to make it 3-3 on 55 minutes.

Daly then took over, scoring twice in the space of a minute on 65 and 66 minutes to put ATU 5-3 ahead and complete his hat-trick.

Alex Halpin added a sixth in the 88th minute after some great footwork from Daly before rounding off the scoring with a brilliant strike from 20 yards out.

After going 2-0 down early on, the team showed great character to turn the game around and finish with seven goals.

ATU Freshers 5-0 TUS Midlands
Full-Time

A dominant performance from the squad as ATU Freshers secured a convincing 5-0 victory over TUS Midlands, with a hat-trick from Rian Durkan and a second consecutive clean sheet.

ATU got off to the perfect start after just five minutes when Cory Walker produced a brilliant run and some excellent footwork to create the opportunity for Rian Durkan, who made no mistake to put the team 1-0 ahead.

The game remained competitive before Tom Clancy doubled ATU’s advantage on 65 minutes, finishing off a move created by Mark Leahy to give the hosts some breathing room.

Durkan grabbed his second of the afternoon ten minutes later, following in to convert the rebound after another superb piece of dribbling from Walker saw his effort crash off the crossbar.

Just three minutes later, Durkan completed his hat-trick. Excellent work from Leahy to win the ball back created the opportunity, and Durkan took full advantage to make it 4-0.

Mark Leahy rounded off the scoring in the 88th minute, pouncing on a loose ball at the back before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper in a one-on-one to complete an emphatic afternoon for ATU.

At the other end, two excellent saves from Jason Daly, alongside another solid defensive display, ensured the lads secured back-to-back clean sheets.

Five goals, three points and another clean sheet. A fantastic all-round team performance from ATU Freshers!

SENIORS VS TUS LIMERICK

 ATU Galway 5-5 TUS Limerick

A thrilling ten-goal encounter saw ATU Galway and TUS Limerick share the spoils in a dramatic 5-5 draw.

ATU made the perfect start in the eighth minute when a superb line-breaking pass from goalkeeper Josh Bullman found Ben Place, who turned brilliantly before playing Alex Murphy through into space. Murphy squared the ball for Tom Daly to finish into an empty net from close range.

TUS responded almost immediately, finding the equaliser in the 10th minute after getting in behind the ATU defence down the left and squaring for their striker to finish from five yards.

Just before the break, ATU regained the lead. A neat one-two between Ethan Bowman and Dawitt Dems opened up the TUS defence, with Dems producing a tidy finish into the bottom-left corner in the 43rd minute.

TUS drew level again five minutes into the second half, capitalising on a misplaced pass in the defence before converting one-on-one against Bullman. The visitors then took the lead on the hour mark, breaking through the ATU defence to slot home and make it 3-2.

Gavin Smyth levelled proceedings from the penalty spot in the 75th minute, but the drama continued as TUS regained the advantage just two minutes later, finishing into an empty net after a long ball caught the ATU defence out.

ATU responded almost immediately. Ethan Bowman’s long throw caused problems in the TUS box, with Mark McCardle winning the second ball and laying it off to Smyth, who fired home from the edge of the box with his weaker foot to make it 4-4.

TUS struck again to lead 5-4, working the ball through midfield and out wide before playing a pass in behind the ATU defence for their number 15 to finish past Bullman.

However, ATU had the final say. In the 89th minute, Tom Daly’s powerful effort from around 30 yards was parried by the TUS goalkeeper, allowing Daire Crowe to react quickest and fire home the rebound to rescue a dramatic late equaliser.

And there was still time for one final twist. ATU Galway thought they had snatched a dramatic winner in the dying seconds when Dawitt Dems found the back of the net with what looked to be the final kick of the game. However, the celebrations were cut short as the referee ruled the goal out for handball, bringing a chaotic encounter to a dramatic close.

A remarkable contest featuring ten goals, multiple lead changes and late drama, as ATU Galway showed their resilience to earn a share of the points.

ATU Galway 2-0 Trinity

A strong performance from the lads, securing a 2-0 victory with both goals coming in the first half.

Rian Durkan opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a brilliant piece of footwork before unleashing a superb strike from 25 yards out with his wand of a left foot.

Just three minutes later, Tim Kaicinskas doubled the lead, following a great tackle from Adam Scahill at the back, Paul Keegan and Corey Walker linked up brilliantly to break through the Trinity defence, with Tim finishing neatly from the edge of the box.

The lads continued to show some nice passages of play throughout the game, backed up by a solid defensive display and strong goalkeeping to keep a clean sheet.

A great all-round performance to get the job done!

Men's Soccer End of Year Report

Posted 9th Dec 2025
Author Laura Broderick (Super Admin)

College football started back in mid-September with over 80+ players attending trials & training sessions throughout the vetting process.

Once squads were selected for Senior & Fresher squads, Training continued for both squads on Mondays with Wednesday’s sessions used for social sessions (with some technical work)

We had 2 competitive teams in action with both a ‘Senior’ side & a ‘Freshers’ side both competing in national competitions.

Our seniors got off to a great start with a 3-1 win away to TUS Midwest in Limerick. That was quickly followed with a 1-2 defeat at home to a strong UoG side in the local ‘Derby’ and finished

The 1st phase of games with a disappointing 1-2 defeat away to TUS Midlands in Athlone. So while we were very competitive in all 3 games, only managed to get one win on the board.

This resulted in an away ¼ final to MTU Cork and this turned out to be a very one sided affair and despite us scoring 1st, lost our 1-7 in what was a game to forget.

Our Freshers on the other hand were on fire from the get-go and hit the ground running with a 7-2 win away to Maynooth, followed by a 2-1 win at home to MTU Kerry and finished the 1st phase

Of games with a comprehensive home win v TUS Midlands Athlone. This resulted in a home ¼ final V Dundalk IT which we won 4-1 and a tough semi-final away to UCC Cork in which we won

3-2 after extra time with a late/late winner from Alan Zimmerer.

The league final took place in Athlone on December 3rd v Collaiste Íde and in what was a great ‘cup final’ - goals from captain Alex Halpin & David Igbokwe gave us a 2-1 as we retained the

league title that we also won last season.

Training sessions consist of a combination of practices including technical and tactical drills, player development drills and practice games/phases of play and off course

some ‘fun’ games and drills to keep things light-hearted when appropriate. All training is provided by UEFA qualified coaches.

Goals for semester 2 are for ‘Cup’ competitions on both fronts for seniors and freshers. Both competitions should start late January 2026.

Seniors will be hoping to get a good run once again in the cup and the Freshers will be hoping to also retain this cup competition and once again achieve the ‘Double’

ATU Galway Fresher Soccer Champions!!

Our Fresher Soccer team had a brilliant win in the League Final last week, defeating Cork Colleges of Further Education on a scoreline of ATU Galway 2 - Cork Colleges 1.

ATU got off to a great start with a goal from Tom Daly of Colga FC before half time. Cork came out all guns blazing in the second half and responded with a goal shortly after the break. With 10 minutes remaining ATU introduced Alex Murphy, his first introduction to playing time for the college after a long stent on the sideline due to injury. The Galway United star riffled home the winner with only 8 to play and ATU Galway held out to take home the cup. Huge congrats to the players and management who after a hectic coupe of months on the road they got their rewards. Roll on the cup campaign after Christmas.

Semester two

The club had a very busy period after the Christmas break and although our 1st team did not have any more competitive games after a poor 1st term, our 2nd team continued their massive

Improvement and were on a constant upward curve. Numbers at training were consistent from Jan – March with a mix of 1st and 2nd teamers as well as many recreational players turning out and getting involved.

Our 2nd team played their Eustace shield ¼ final away to Blanchardstown in Dublin and after a slow start, found themselves 0-2 down on 20 mins.

However, a terrific response resulted in goals from Walid Muhsin, José Poblaciones, Clinton Imade and Usama Israr x 2 giving us a massive 5-3 win on the day.

In the semi-final, we found ourselves once again away to Griffith college in Dublin, who had beaten us earlier in the season in a league game.

But on this occasion, our lads rose to the challenge and came away with a deserved 2-1 win, courtesy of goals from José Poblaciones and Clinton Imade.

The college cup finals were once again held at Athlone stadium at the end of February and we played Colaiste Ide in the final on Tues 28th.

In what was a very close affair that was 0-0 for over an hour, an unfortunate 2nd yellow card which resulted in a sending off, turned the game in Colaiste Ide’s favour which led to us losing out by 0-2.

A heroic campaign by all involved in this squad ended with a tinge of what might have been, but the lads can be very proud of the progress made and look forward to next season.

The semester so far

Posted 7th Dec 2022
Author Brian Laffey

Our ATU Galway soccer club had a hectic 1st semester with both our squads playing a total of 11 games in an 8-week period from mid-October to late-November.

Our first team didn't have a good start to the year. The only highlight for them was the 2-2 draw in a 'Derby game' against rivals across the bright University of Galway. In this particular game, the team was ahead on two occasions, only to concede a very late equalizer goal in the 93rd minute of the game.

The second team also had a slow start to their campaign, in most games the lost by a goal here and there. They did however improve with each game, leaving them with a win in their last shield game before Christmas. This leaves the team in a lovely position. They now await a quarter final fixture in the new year, with hopes to progress further.
