ATU BADMINTON CLUB REPORT 2025

Competitions & Performance

We have not competed in any competitions in semester 1. We will be taking part in intervarsities in spring. We have been in content with ATU Donegal, ATU Letterkenny and ATU Sligo to host friendly matches between each college sometime early next semester.

Participation & Membership

The club currently has 134 registered members, with 30–40 attending weekly sessions. The group includes about ten experienced players, mostly men, and 5–10 beginners showing strong potential. Five members have prior competitive experience, providing leadership and guidance to developing players.

Training Summary

Team training (Monday): Focus on specific competition pairings (singles, mixed doubles, doubles) while also individually working on certain weak areas (playing at the net, smashes, defence, endurance).

General training (Wednesday): Doubles or mixed doubles matches throughout the 2-hour session to maximize court usage as there are usually many people waiting on a court. When there are fewer people and the space allows, singles matches are also played. More experienced members will give tips and advice to beginners throughout sessions. Rules of the game are explained during the first few training sessions of the semester or to any new members that join during the semester.

Goals for Semester 2

We care hoping to increase training intensity in preparation for intervarsities. We also think the internal competition would be good to boost morale as well as motivate the members to train.

Club Highlights

During quieter training days, we have tried out interesting match setups that would normally not be allowed. Examples of this are playing with our non-dominant hands, quadruples? (4 players vs 4 players), playing while seated/lying down.
